On the 15th of June, 2017 Jinhee and I transferred our house in Oakville to it’s new owners. Just over three years later, somewhere in the back half of June, 2020 we will take possession of what should be our last house.
Of course we named the boat Home Free with the thought of travelling the world for some time, but with career demands as they are, the journey has been more chaotic than originally envisioned. In late February, just before the outbreak of COVID-19 in the US, we signed a deal to acquire what we think will be an amazing place to spend time over the coming years. With all of the uncertainty, we have been sitting quietly expecting that there may be problems with the sale. Luckily now, just a few weeks away, all looks good.
Our new home is located on Amherst Island, near Kingston, Ontario and offers privacy, easy access to water, well groomed landscapes and reasonably good services.
There is no plan to rename Home Free however. The cruising will continue in some manner when COVID-19 recedes and borders re-open. Until then we expect to spend a lot more time in isolation in much more serene surroundings.
We will also be spending significant time in the city as the needs of workplaces allow. It will mean a bit more juggling of work and taking care of the house and boat, but the house was just too good to pass up.
The house is on the water but high enough up that it should never be affected by rising water levels. Sitting on about six acres of land, the original owners planted trees throughout the property to give it an appealing landscape and installed an irrigation system to support those trees.
The interior follows a traditional design with some modern looks, including lots of windows and storage. The light is always a draw and with the largest windows on the North side, overlooking the water, it will provide ample light, for daily activity.
Jinhee enjoys cooking and the kitchen is not exactly what we were looking for, but is still spacious and modern. It will allow us to entertain and enjoy family and friends for larger gatherings again.
The rear of the house faces the water and has a beautiful deck which will soon be adorned with outdoor furniture to enjoy a book or a sunset while watching out over the green of the yard and the blue of the water.
