Hurricane Erin’s Remains

September 4, 2025

Of course hurricane Erin has long passed, but the remnants went through Scotland on the weekend. I wanted to put up one more short post because I tried to move my boat from Inverkip (Kip Marina) to Largs Yacht Haven, a grand total of 9nm on Sunday evening, and then thought better of it.

Here is a short video of what the wind meter showed while I was beating into the wind and waves. (Gusts topped out at 45 knots despite only showing about 40 knots in the video.)

And by complete coincidence, someone on shore took a photo (posted to facebook) of me beating into those waves.

Home Free beating into the waves – Note the anchor/bow is about eight feet above the waterline on a calm day.

After about 2 miles and a bit further away from protection from the wind, I turned around and went back to Inverkip to stay in Kip marina for another night. There was no point in beating myself and the boat up. The boat didn’t even bounce after I got it turned around. Travelling in the same direction as the waves made for a very smooth ride.

On Monday morning I made the trip in relatively calm waters at close to normal speed. The delay made the lifting of the boat a lot more of a rush and crunched the travel plans but still it was a more rational choice.
